BELIZE TIDBITS---JULY 2009 Since 1987, I have been asked many times about hurricanes and other
weather questions pertaining to Belize; never did anyone ask me about
earthquakes. I know that Belize is the only country in Central America that
does not have an active volcano. Well, there was a 7.1 magnitude earthquake
last month in Honduras, south of Belize that was felt around the country.
The Motagua fault runs East-West along the Belize and Honduras border. The
actual earthquake took place along this fault line. It still may be too
early to determine all the damage, but it appears that the areas around
Monkey River, Independence and Placencia felt the effects with minor damage
reported. Hope that you, family and friends were not affected. John Travolta arrived in Belize via a cruise ship, came to the Radisson
Hotel in the afternoon and left later via his own plane. His stay was
certainly short and he avoided crowds according to Channel 7 news. The media
made it sound like he was very reclusive; possibly, he may still be mourning
the loss of his son. I was an extra in the movie "Urban Cowboy"
and Travolta and his brother Joey were certainly nice to everyone on the
set. TRAVEL NEWS—Maya Island Air announced that it plans to start regional
service around July 8 to Cancun, Guatemala City and San Pedro Sula,
Honduras. This would certainly give more options to people that wanted to
travel to Belize. I hope this is a win-win for everyone. For more
information, go to www.mayaislandair.com. TEAM BELIZE WINS "TEXAS WATER SAFARI"---This is a rugged 260
mile race from San Marcos, Texas to Seadrift on the coast. Congrats to
Belize members Armin Lopez, Daniel Lopez and Amado Cruz. Team Belize has
also won this race three other times and came in second once. This is one of
the toughest canoe races in the world. MY WEBSITE---A lot of people ask me why I do not update my website. My
answer is that things change quickly in the real estate industry and if
someone has an interest or question, they will pick up the phone to find out
about properties and/or ask questions. Although I specialize in the Stann
Creek District and you have a question about another area; call me. I know
people all over Belize and can usually refer you to someone that specializes
in certain areas or types of property. I have also referred people to other
countries in Central America, based upon their interests and/or questions.
During the last year, I have referred different people to Costa Rica, Panama
and to other areas of Belize. Have a great summer and send some rain to the Central Texas area. It is
certainly dry and hot here. Ron Forrester
