BELIZE TIDBITS----OCTOBER 2011

My best friend in Belize, John Burks died recently and I am going to dedicate this newsletter to his memory. (More on John at the end of this newsletter).

A "Belated Happy Birthday" to the country of Belize. Belize just celebrated its thirtieth year of independence on September 21, 2011. Ironically, George Price recently died. Mr. Price was the first Prime Minister of Belize and is often referred to as the "Father of Belize". I don’t remember the exact years, but Price served as Prime Minister two separate and different times.

WEB PAGES AND BLOGS ABOUT BELIZE---I try to log into the Belize Forums on a regular basis to catch up on news and viewpoints on Belize. I have also found some other sites that I like. If interested, Google Barnacle Bill’s "As the coconuts drop", Winjama, San Pedro Scoop, Taco Girl, etc. All of these sites also have some great pictures of Belize.

If you are thinking about Belize as place to retire or invest, call me; even if it is not an area that I have listings. You will get my honest opinion. If you are thinking about selling your Belize property, call me and I will explain why I have been successful in marketing property in Belize. As of today, I have one nice Sittee River lot and several beachfront lots for sale. I can put together 150 feet of nice Caribbean frontage with water and electricity. If you are not interested in Belize real estate, and just want to ask some questions, feel free to contact me.

John Burks was my best friend in Belize and I miss him very much. John was born in West Texas, went to high school in San Marcos. He very seldom talked about Viet Nam, but he received the Bronze Star for his military service. He worked on a cattle ranch in British Honduras in the early 70’s. I still remember most of his stories about the different hardships during that era. I became friends with John when we both worked at British American Cattle Co. in the mid eighties. We didn’t make a lot of money but we met some great people and had a good time. John moved back to Belize in 1988 to be the company representative. I always enjoyed my trips to Belize then because I was able to spend quality time with my good friend and pick his brain about Belize. No Internet then and we communicated by means of an occasional phone call, a fax, or the handwritten letter. I still remember when John told me about this beautiful Belizean girl he had met. He and Yvette married and had two wonderful children Jess and Clay. I appreciated the fact that Yvette always allowed John and me to spend some time together whether it was in Belize or the U.S. Since John found the property which later became the Sittee Point Development, I certainly feel that part of my success is due in part to John’s effort. Too many stories to try and retell in this newsletter, but I do remember saying this about John. "I would trust John Burks with my life, wallet, and wife or girlfriend" Rest in peace my friend, you will always be remembered in the highest regard.
